In this article, we will talk about the role of data integration in information systems, applications, and services for various business areas during martial law.
РRealizing that the war was inevitable, representatives of different business sectors began to prepare differently: law enforcement agencies and government authorities in one way and banks, telecoms, manufacturing, insurance companies, and retail chains in another. They all realized that information warfare and cyberattacks would intensify alongside the real war. Accordingly, they began to prepare information security tools such as SOC, SIEM, antivirus protection, firewalls, etc.
In addition to preparing information security tools, there was an urgent need to restructure or introduce new business processes. It was to achieve an important goal - adaptation to the new realities dictated by the war in Ukraine. Such adaptation includes information systems, applications, services, and integration readiness.
Those who were ready quickly rebuilt their business without significant losses and continued to operate successfully. Those who were unprepared spent a lot of time developing, adapting, and integrating their business processes to continue working.
Based on the experience of the IT Specialist in integration processes, we identify three key blocks:
1. Protection and security of services2. Availability and fault tolerance of services3. Correctness of integration processes
A specialized integration platform is a solution that covers all three of these blocks. Let's have a closer look at each of these blocks and talk about the use of an integration platform.
Protection and security of services
The integration platform provides protection and security of services, namely:1. Verification of keys, tokens, and certificates2. Logging/journaling of integrations3. Data encryption4. Data integrity control5. Other integration security tasks
To solve these tasks, we use solutions from IBM, namely:● IBM AppConnect Enterprise (data integration bus)● IBM DataPower Gateway (integration/service/API security gateway)
These solutions were somewhat underestimated before the war. But with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, government officials, telecoms, banks, critical infrastructure enterprises, retail, and other businesses have highly appreciated these products.
Availability and resilience of services
The integration platform ensures the availability and resilience of services:1. The ability to transfer data in online and offline modes2. Guaranteed data transmission in case of problems with electricity and communication3. Data integrity control4. Publication and availability of services
To solve these tasks, we use solutions from IBM, namely:● IBM AppConnect Enterprise (data integration bus)● IBM ApiConnect (service publishing system/API)
Data synchronization and integrity are essential in decentralized information systems. It requires using an integration platform whose logic allows for data integration in the event of power and communication problems.
An example from our practice. Due to military operations, new payments for victims have been introduced. Such payments must be made promptly and accurately without duplicating or losing. Accordingly, the integration with registers and accounting systems was built using an integration platform that ensured service availability and fault tolerance.
Correctness of integration processes
The integration platform ensures the correctness of integration processes:1. Guaranteed data delivery2. Correct error handling in case of system unavailability3. Caching and storage of information
To solve the above tasks, we use solutions from IBM, namely:● IBM AppConnect Enterprise (integration data bus).
Properly and correctly implemented integration processes should consider all limitations and possible problems to minimize the use of financial and technical resources.Another example. Mobile phones of subscribers actively used to run applications and services are often unavailable due to the war. On the integration platform for one of the insurance companies in Ukraine, we implemented a mechanism for checking the availability status of a customer's mobile phone. It significantly reduced the number of SMS messages sent, which led to significant budget savings.
Data integration in information systems, applications, and services for various business areas during martial law plays an essential role in all areas of business, critical infrastructure enterprises, organizations, and public sector companies.
Reliably protected and well-functioning IT infrastructure allows companies, banks, and institutions to continue operations, which is a big step towards our Victory! Our specialists will provide more information if you are interested in this topic.
